The homebuilding landscape has changed a lot since 1981, when Moffitt Built began developing and building homes in the KC area. Methods and homebuilding commonplace practices have changed but so have consumer needs and wants, as noted in this neat video from CNN tracing the evolution of the American home. In the past 40 years, the average home square footage has not quite doubled and amenities such as fireplaces and air conditioning units have now become standard. Exterior materials have also seen quite the evolution...read more here. What a neat progression to follow!

True. Being green involves further planning, can incur additional costs, and can sometimes take more time and certainly, requires a level of experience and the proper legal certification. As a Certified Green Builder, we understand the process and detail that goes into planning homes that rank high on the "Green Scale." This is why the new KC green apartment development caught our eye. Kansas City has rapidly become a forward-thinking modern marvel of a city in the past few years capturing national attention for everything it has to offer. With the construction of these new riverfront apartments, it looks like KC will continue to rival the best of the big cities in lifestyle amenities as well. According to national experts and the development team, the two buildings will comprise the largest U.S. multifamily apartment project using Passive House Institute-certified construction, a system that’s more energy-efficient than the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building standard! Set for a 2017 tenant move-in, this is certainly a development to watch over the coming year!
We can't deny evolution. We see it in everything from fashion to cars. One such area where evolution should most definitely be recognized is in the home. The way we live our lives as a household unit has changed just from last year to now, let alone from say, the 1950s to today. There are obvious updates to modern-day homes that come as no surprise like the addition of home offices, the 'movie room,' and the walk-in closet, just to name a few. Other updates are more subtle; the "power pantry," is an example of an update that may not be recognized as a necessity but should be considered when drawing out plans for your new home. This article perfectly outlines the growing need for an update in kitchen storage space to enable and support our modern-day habits.
Shutters have become a feature of homes that no longer serve the purpose they've been named for. Most often, shutters serve as an aesthetic focal point to a home adding a pop of color or interest to the exterior. So often, however, this feature can go wrong: shutters that aren't large enough to close over the windows, shutters placed in an area rendering them completely useless...maybe it's time to stop forcing the shutters and instead, consider adding the pop of color and area of visual interest by adding more layers to the exterior body of the home. This new modern take on exterior color will provide you with the visual interest you're looking for and avoid the deadly 'shutter foul,' we're all tired of seeing.
Having been in the homebuilding business for more than 30 years, we've seen trends come and go and come back again. Modern and simplistic was the way in the 1950s and with the popularity of the show Mad Men, that style has had a resurgence. However, it seems that the trend is tiring, according to Realtor.com. The craze has infiltrated not only the architectural aspect of homebuilding but the design and fashion aspect of decorating a home, where it may have crossed the line. Incorporating pieces of different 'design eras,' is one thing, but modeling an entire space after the Mad Men set, may be taking it too far, according to the article. We've seen so many stylistic preferences and cater to one or many at any given time, resulting in a very unique portfolio. Whatever your architectural or design preferences, we have the experience and enthusiasm to do it and do it right.
New construction demand changes annually, monthly, and even daily. Neighborhoods can be desirable one day and passé the next. Subdivisions can contain the empty lot inventory for new home construction in the Spring and be sold out mid-Summer. The 'themes' for these types of housing circumstances is often predictable if you're mindful of market trends. This article contains the major themes predicted to affect the housing market as it relates to homebuilding in the coming months.
Though each geographical market will vary, most of these themes will serve as an undercurrent nationwide. We have already seen several of these themes this year at Moffitt Built as we continue to help first-time homeowners and downsizers manifest their homebuilding visions. We are lucky to have survived a lot of the economic factors that many homebuilders have not, thanks to our supportive community recognizing our commitment to quality homebuilding and to our clients every step of the process. In 10 days, the 2015 KCHBA Spring Parade of Homes begins! It's the perfect opportunity for residents of the KC area to get familiar with what KC builders have to offer the community. There are 377 homes in this year's Parade to visit. Tours are open daily to the public from 11am - 6pm through May 10th. Moffitt Built has two homes in the Parade this year - #s 63 and 86 in Lenexa and Shawnee, respectively. We're thrilled to be a part of this event and hope that you'll stop by one or both of our homes! Celebrate the home building craft with us this season!
If someone asked you, what features would you include in a a new home, what would you choose? So many options are out there from outdoor kitchens, low-energy windows, and extravagant home theatre systems, the possibilities are endless. Curious to find out what other home builders are constructing and what other new homeowners are asking for? This is an interesting article about the newest and most popular features in homes for 2015.
Many of Moffitt Built's new construction homes have been featuring soapstone countertops (for its resiliance), outdoor lanais for both entertaining and relaxing, and low-E windows to conserve energy and promote efficiency in the home's heating/cooling system. What appeals to you? One of our companies, MOJO Built, has been developed with the purpose of rebuilding yesterday's historic homes for today's modern lifestyles. With remodel projects spanning the entire metro area, MOJO Built has a clear vision and founders who are passionate about each job at hand. Having listed and sold homes in Kansas City for years, the founders of Mojo Built recognized a lack of qualified industry professionals who possess the ability and vision to enhance functionally obsolescent floor plans of historic homes to today’s standards. Today’s lifestyles require modern floorplans, retrofitted for today’s technology, implemented by a qualified team who has the unique ability to transform an established home in a classic neighborhood while retaining its charm and character.
In response, we, Joe Woods and John Moffitt, formed Mojo Built in 2011. Our mission to maintain, preserve, and prolong the architectural integrity of the home throughout the remodeling process is what makes the finished product of a Mojo Built home unique. Joe Woods, with 10 years of experience in residential real estate, together with John Moffitt, who carries a lifetime of experience in quality residential home construction make up the certified Mojo Built team. MOJO Built now has a Facebook page where you can stay up-to-date on our remodel projects, look at past projects and stay in touch and connect with our family.
